What is Yoga?

Yoga is quickly becoming a preferred method of maintaining a healthy body & mind. The word yoga is Sanskrit meaning "to yoke" or "to bind" and is often interpreted as "union". Yoga is a method of discipline and is comprised of 8 limbs, or parts.

  1. Yamas (Social Ethics)

  2. Niyamas (Positive Duties)

  3. Asana (Postures)

  4. Pranayama (Regulation/Control of Breath)

  5. Pratyahara (Withdrawal of Senses)

  6. Dharana (Concentration)

  7. Dhyana (Meditation)

  8. Samadhi (Liberation)

As we explore these eight limbs, we begin refining our behavior and our relation to the outer world. Today, most of the population practices the third limb,"asana" (postures), which is designed to purify the body and provide strength and endurance required for long periods of meditation. There is controversy of when and how yoga practice evolved. Some say yoga has been around for thousands of years, some say as early as the 1800's. Either way, yoga has been proven to not only utilize our body by synchronizing movements with our breath, but to heighten our sense

of well-being and our relation to our part in the world.

At Yonah Yoga Studio, we meet ourselves where we are. Every body is different & it’s important to keep this in mind on our yoga journey. Yoga isn’t a competition. not with self. Not with anyone in the room. It’s a practice where we get to meet ourselves as we are.

<<satsang >>

a sanskrit term derived from two roots:

sat meaning “true” &
sangha meaning “community”

or could be translated as “associating with good people” or simply “being in the company of truth” & refers to the act of gathering with like-minded, uplifting people, especially those on the spiritual path.

having a satsang can have a profound effect on the mind since entering into a shared space of support and unity encourages selfless emotions to arise.

My sister and I were recently visiting Helen, Ga and we decided to try a class at Yonah Yoga. It was just a short 8 minute drive so very convenient. The studio was very calming and had a nice zen feeling. Our class was a Yin class and it involved staying in poses for 3-4 minutes which was exactly what I needed as I have some tight muscles. My sister found the class very relaxing and we would definitely come back next time we are in town.

Charlene was very knowledgeable and welcoming to a newbie like me. A genuine practice for all skill levels. Left my first session feeling grounded and confident. Highly recommend this to anyone as the benefits are without parallel. Cya there
